Dear Parents:                                                            Picture of girl reading a book
Reading is one of the most important skills children will ever learn. The child who reads well-and loves to read-will excel in school and achieve personal growth.
The staff at Summerfield Elementary School is committed to this belief, which is why we are placing renewed emphasis on improving reading across the curriculum. To accomplish this goal, we have initiated a program of reading practice throughout the school called Renaissance Place (previously referred to as AR), a computer based reading motivational system currently used by more than 40,000 schools in North America.
Renaissance Place has three main objectives:
1) to monitor growth while motivating students to practice and increase their reading skills,
2) to improve students’ critical-thinking skills,
3) to instill in students a lifelong love of reading.
Just like the practice required to become good at sports or playing musical instruments we believe students must practice reading skills to become better readers.
We will be doing many exciting things throughout the year with Accelerated Reading. You may notice very soon that your child may be reading more books than usual. Many parents, in fact, find their children's new enthusiasm for reading so contagious that they start reading more themselves--a great family activity to do together! I would like to encourage you to support your child(ren) in their quest for knowledge through reading.
If you have any questions about the Accelerated Reading Program, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Reinke or your child's homeroom teacher.
Sincerely,
Brenda Reinke

The FCAT Explorer is a free, online practice program from the Florida Department of Education.  It features three practice programs created especially for elementary school students:  Galactic Library (3rd), Reading Odyssey (4th), and Math Station (5th).  All three programs offer practice for the skills tested on FCAT and feature lots of items to help you get the most out of your study time.  Best of all, the FCAT Explorer is online, which means you can use the FCAT Explorer on any computer connected to the Internet: at school, at the library, even at home. Your performance on the test can benefit from the extra time you spend studying math and reading on the FCAT Explorer.  To get your free FCAT Explorer sign-in name and password, see your teacher.
